私の英語ノート 2016/03/31

自家焙煎をしているコーヒー屋が近くにあるのだが、そこは喫煙者のたまり場のようになっているので非常に行きにくい。ここは昔のタイムスリップしたような場所だ。思えば、昔はどこでもタバコを吸っていた。飛行機の中でも電車の中でも、教師は教室の中でも平気でタバコを吸っていた。時代はものすごく変わった。1:00:52 40年前の映画だが大統領の御前でも平気で紫煙をくゆらせている。注；いま紫煙という言い方をしたが、英語では a blue wisp of cigarette smoke, blue smoke of a cigarette と言う。色の違いに注意。

包丁について

アメリカで最低賃金が引き上げられる動きがある。時間給を15ドルにしろという事らしいが、個人の経営者にとっては悪夢だろう。日本の消費税も増税されると、一番困るのは個人事業主だろう。値上げすると客は来なくなるので増税分を小売利益から捻出する、すると収益が悪化するので利ざやはますます減って経営が圧迫される。アメリカの場合、飲食業で最低賃金を引き上げると、雇用主がその分を負担するか、それともチップは不要にして値段のほうを上げるかのどちらかの選択を迫られることになる。雇用主は多分後者を選ぶ。アメリカでチップ文化が衰退していくのは寂しいような気もするがいいことには違いない。チップと言うのは元々は心づけだったからだ。現在のチップ制度は強制的なものだ。だから、チップ制度は不要。アメリカで、最低賃金引き上げが不可能とは言わないが、最低賃金引き上げで多くの店が潰れることだけは間違いがないだろう。つまり、飲食業界でも一パーセント組と99パーセント組に分かれてしまうことになる。やはり最低賃金引き上げは消費税増税と同様に馬鹿なことなのだろう。

また、共和党大統領候補の馬鹿トランプが物議をかもし出した。今度は日本が在日米軍の駐留費用を100%拠出しなければ、軍を撤退させるというものだ。昨日の新聞はこの記事で賑わい、さまざまな議論があった。なかでも前大阪市長はトランプが大統領になれば沖縄からアメリカ軍は撤退すると指摘していた。トランプの言うことはいちいち議論する価値があるのだろうか？第一、トランプと言う男は一代で財を築いた男ではなく、二代目のボンボンだ。そして、会社を4回倒産させている。トランプ大学と言う専門学校をつくって詐欺同然のことをやった。トランプの売りは派手さ、つまり金持ちイメージを売ることだ。、、、、話を米軍撤退に戻すと、8年前のオバマはキューバのグアンタナモ基地にある収容施設を閉鎖すると公約したが、そのようなちっぽけな公約も実行できなかった。民主主義のプロセスに阻まれたからだ。
アメリカが世界最大の軍隊を持ち、世界各国に軍隊を展開させる理由はドルが世界の基軸通貨であるための必須条件だ。現在ドルの価値を裏づけしているのは世界最大の借金大国のアメリカでは世界一強い軍隊をおいてはほかに存在しない。話を簡単にすると日本や韓国から軍を撤退すると軍事バランスが崩れて、その結果、ドルの権威がなくなってしまう。つまりアメリカは弱い国になってしまうと言うことになる。これはトランプの口から出る言葉とは逆の世界になる。アメリカは何があっても、軍事費用を削ったりはしない。アメリカ軍が日本から撤退する時があるとすれば、それは日本に覇権を譲る時だ。

横須賀に新しい顔が出来た。38階建ての高層マンションだ。竣工前から、前総理大臣の息子で国会議員の小泉xxx が最上階を購入したと評判のあったビルだ。そして、噂によれば最上階のほとんどは中国人が買い占めてしまったらしい。もともと私如きの庶民には違う世界の話だから、勝手にしてくださいとしか言えないが、これがテナントとなれば、話は別。よほど、賃料が高いのか、肝心の一階部分の一番いい位置にテナントが入っていない。これはちょっと恥ずかしい。要するに横須賀にこのような物件は必要なかったということなのだろう。話は少しずれて、このビルの一階に最初に入ったテナントがコンビニと日高屋。日高屋は味もいいし値段も安く庶民の味方といえるが、ニラレバ炒めには不満がある。ニラレバではなく、レバニラにして欲しい。ニラが多いのか、レバーが多いのかで名称が変わるらしいが、諸説があるようだ。
